Carol J. Smith passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, after a short illness. She was a long-time resident of Temperance, Michigan.
Carol enjoyed a 30 year career working at the corporate headquarters of The Andersons in Maumee Ohio as well as her ten years as an adjunct instructor for The University of Toledo and Monroe County Community College.
Throughout her life she sought out various ways to connect and help in the community, working numerous years as a volunteer foster child advocate with CASA of Monroe County. Additionally, she was an active volunteer driver for the American Cancer Center in Toledo and ProMedica Cancer Connection of Monroe transporting cancer patients to their appointments.
Her love of animals, especially of cats, was a strong part of her life and she firmly supported and volunteered for numerous local groups who work to spay and neuter pets and feral animals. Addition she was a strong vocal advocate and volunteer for PACT for Animals, a national non-profit organization dedicated to finding temporary foster homes for the pets of service people when off on training or deployed away from home and also the pets of individuals facing a long-term care situation away from the home.
Carol was a proud member of the Little Black Dress group of Bedford Township, Michigan.
She and her husband loved to travel, hiking throughout 49 US National Parks as well as traveling throughout the world. They were avid birders, spending hours backyard and locally birding and also traveling across the country to catch migration paths each year. The most memorable journeys however always included traveling with nieces and gatherings with other family members across the country.
She was preceded in death by parents, Gerald B. and Martha (Gehring) McLane and brother David G. McLane. Carol is survived by the love of her life and best friend, husband Carl M. Smith, the joy of her life, son Michael G. Smith as well as a large, extended family.
Memorial visitation will be Monday, May 1, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Urbanski’s Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave. Temperance, MI where the funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. officiated by Joel Brickner. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to cancer research of the donor’s choice or Hospice of NW Ohio.
