Mary DeNell Van Dyke, 90 years, of Temperance, MI passed away on November 19, 2021 in the Toledo Hospital. The daughter of Joseph and Grace (Morrette) Kessler she was born on February 6, 1931 in Toledo, OH.
Mary graduated from Lambertville High School in 1949. She married Norman R. VanDyke on Valentine’s Day in 1951 he preceded her in death on November 1, 2014. She worked for Toledo Scale in the fifties but left to start a family.
Mary and Norman were active in the Whiteford Heritage Association (WHAM) and worked to restore the one room schoolhouse in Whiteford that they attended as children. She loved working in her vegetable garden, cutting grass on her John Deere and doing body work on cars a skill she learned from her father. Above all else, she was devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a friend.
Mary is survived by her children, James (Bridget) Van Dyke, Michelle (Eric) Braden and Sam (Beth) Van Dyke; son-in-law, Terry Shaffer; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents; loving husband, Norman; daughter, Debi Shaffer and sister, Joanne Garverick.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 29, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Urbanski’s Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave. Temperance, MI. where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Noon. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery Sylvania, OH. Memorial donations may be made to the donor’s choice.
