Stephen E. Lane, age 81 of Temperance, Michigan passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by family. Steve was born March 12, 1943 in Detroit, MI., the son of Stephen J. and Genevieve T. (Politowski) Lane. Steve was a 1961 graduate of Ida High School and had attended Ferris State University. Steve married the love of his life, Barbara A. (Keane) Lane on November 14, 1964 and the two were wed for 44 years. Steve and Barb had two children, Steve, Jr. and Tammy (Lane) Velich (Rick); four grandchildren, Chelsea (Velich) Dudley (Aaron), Lindsey (Velich) Vander Vlucht (Justin), Patience Lane (Sean), and Hunter (Lane) Lewis (Curtis), as well as five great grandchildren, Leighton, Brooklyn, and Gabriel Vander Vlucht, Ayvah and Blayke Lewis, with a sixth great grandchild, Audrey Vander Vlucht expected in September. Steve was a skilled self-employed carpenter and also ran a catering business with his wife, Barb, Lane Catering. Steve served as a firefighter with the Bedford Fire Department for 30 years. Steve was known for his meticulous craftsmanship as a carpenter, his love of cooking, hunting and fishing in the outdoors and spending time at his cabin in Glennie, Michigan with family and friends. Steve was a lifelong University of Michigan fan and football enthusiast, reveling in the success of the team’s recent national championship season. Steve loved preparing and enjoying meals with and for his family and friends, spending hours around the table and then playing cards to top off a meal. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Genevieve Lane; wife, Barbara, and son, Stephen, Jr. Steve is survived by his loving companion and girlfriend of 9 years, Mona Swayze, his daughter and son in law, granddaughters, great grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Lane) LaBeau (Don); nephew, Adam (Wendy) LaBeau, and many other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Urbanski’s Bedford Funeral Chapel, 8300 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, MI on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 8330 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, MI on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. where he will lie in state in the narthex after 10:00 a.m. burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to express their gratitude for the outstanding care and compassionate service to all the staff involved in Steve’s care at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital ER, Tawas, Michigan, Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, Saginaw, Michigan ER, Neuro ICU, Neuro Progressive and 4 North Med Surg/Hospice Care, as well as Compassus Hospice.
