James Sweet

James "Jim" Lelen Sweet, 83 years, of Temperance, MI passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, April 20, 2021. He was born on September 23, 1937 in Monroe, MI, and was the son of Leland and Harriet (Duvall) Sweet.

A 1957 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Monroe, he was a star player on the Falcon’s Varsity Basketball team. After high school, Jim served his country in the United States Marine Corps.  Upon an honorable discharge, he took a job at Ford Motor Company where he worked at the Michigan Truck Plant for over 33 years before retiring in 1997.  Jim was a member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance.

 

On June 20, 1964, Jim married Frances Genevieve Kaliski-Kay and raised two children during their 56 year marriage.  He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bird and deer hunting, fishing on Lake Erie, and spending lots of time in nature.  Jim was also a self-taught taxidermist and musician, playing the guitar and harmonica.  During his retirement he also enjoyed painting pictures of nature.  His most treasured times were spent with wife, children, and grandchildren, and he will be remembered for his salacious sense of humor and ability to makes those around him laugh. 

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Teri (Todd) Deindoerfer of Temperance and Jeff (Donna) Sweet of O’Fallon, IL; five grandchildren, Jared (Tiffany) Deindoerfer, Erica (Mitch) Huss, Justin Deindoerfer, Clare Sweet, and Hannah Sweet; one great-grandchild, Leah Deindoerfer; a sister Mary (Vince) Rossi of Monroe; and a brother Roger (Diann) Sweet of Montclova, OH.

 

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in the  Urbanski's Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave  Temperance, MI followed by the funeral mass in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 8330 Lewis Ave Temperance, MI at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Toledo, OH where Military Honors will be conducted by the Lambertville VFW Post 9656.  Jim’s family would like to thank the staff of ProMedica Hospice for their extraordinary compassion and care.  Memorial contributions are requested for ProMedica Hospice or Pheasants Forever.
