Paul Myron Hoy Jr., 92, of Temperance, Michigan was a loving, supportive, and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He left this world peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, March 18, 2024. He was born on January 13, 1932 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Paul and Lillian (Carr) Hoy Sr. After graduating from Woodward High School, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army, airborne division and served during the Korean War from October 1950 until being honorably discharged in October 1953 with the rank of Sergeant. While in the Army, he was an airborne instructor and was awarded the Senior Parachutist Badge.
After serving his country, in November 1953, Paul began his 39-year career with Ohio Bell, an Ameritech Company, as a cable splicer. He attended the University of Toledo and earned a Labor Relations Certificate in 1969, leading to a position as a Construction Placing and Splicing Foreman and then advancinginto construction management and engineering. As an Engineer, Paul designed several projects, including the telephone and cable lines for the 1979 U.S. Open Golf Tournament at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo. Then as an Area Engineering Manager, he assisted in engineering for the 1993 PGA Golf Tournament at the Inverness Country Club, Toledo. After retiring from Ohio Bell/Ameritech, Paul continued his career over the next decade as an Engineer and Consultant, leading and assisting with fiber optic projects for several years in the cities of Szczecin, Gdansk, and Warszawa Poland. Then upon returning to the U.S., he consulted on and managed projects for AT & T, Sprint, McLeod USA, among other clients in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina, and Florida.
Paul grew up in Toledo, Ohio where he met the love of his life Theresa Ann Potrzebowski. They married in April 1956 and moved to Bedford Township, Michigan where they began their family life. Paul enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, woodworking, camping, reading, and working on general fix-it projects. Paul cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren, reading to them, helping them with school and home projects, taking them on trips, attending their school plays, recitals, sporting events, and significant life events, and teaching them how to fish, ride a bike, camp, and make the best fruit pies. He coached 3-B baseball, was a Weblo Leader for the Cub Scouts, and was a District Commissioner and Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America, for which he received the District Award of Merit. Paul and Theresa, with their children and grandchildren, spent many happy summers at their cabin on Caribou Lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan swimming, tubing, playing cards and board games, fishing for pike and walleye, attending local festivals, and taking scenic drives.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Theresa; two loving children, Michael (Deb) Hoy, Cheryl (Joseph Castiglione) Hoy; grandchildren, Heather Hoy, Matthew Bunker, Justin (Anna) Bunker; great-grandchildren, Allison and Elizabeth; sister, Nancy Davis; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Lillian and Paul Hoy Sr.; stepfather, Will Langley; sister, Caroll Komisarek; and brother, Hobart Hoy.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 25, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church 8330 Lewis Ave. Temperance, MI with military honors following the service conducted by the Lambertville VFW Post 9656. Cremation will follow.
