Charlotte Kehoe, age 92 years, of Lambertville, MI joined The Holy Spirit in peace on Thursday, March 20, 2025. The daughter of Francis J. and Balbina (Crowley) Bergen, she was born on November 29, 1932, in Paterson, NJ.
Charlotte was the loving mother of 6 children, Cynthia (Michael) Furgeson of Summerfield, FL, Thomas of San Francisco, CA, Brian of Lambertville, Patrick of Portland, OR, Michael of Lambertville, and Christopher “Kip” (Angela) of Alexandria, VA; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Thomas (Lorraine) of Westbrook, ME.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew “Matt” Kehoe, her parents, and her brother, Francis J. Bergen Jr. of Glen Rock, NJ.
Charlotte met Matt in 1950 while he was home in Paterson, NJ during a school break. Matt had attended the University of Notre Dame for undergraduate and law school. He noticed Charlotte in their neighborhood over the years and always admired her, especially her beautiful red hair. They married on August 23, 1952, and moved to South Bend, IN, where Matt completed his studies. They settled in Toledo, OH after Matt graduated and practiced law, and in 1960 moved to Lambertville where they raised their family.
Matt had served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during WWII before attending Notre Dame. Charlotte attended St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Paterson where she graduated from in 1949 at age 16 having skipped a grade due to her outstanding academic performance.
Charlotte stepped into the role of both parents after Matt’s death in 1981 and still had time to complete an associate degree at Monroe County Community College, volunteer for prolife and post abortion counseling, and spiritual and church related activities, including membership in the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Her later-in-life career found her working at the Lambertville Post Office for nearly 20 years.
Charlotte was a kind and generous soul. Her son, Mike, said when he was young, the other kids had said Charlotte was the nicest Mom. She cared for all her loved ones close by and far from home. She also nurtured others as she cared for her own family.
In addition to raising her own 6 children, Char was a mother to many more whose lives she touched. In her home everyone felt welcome, you just knew she cared about you. She was the closest to being an angel on earth and was deeply faithful throughout the entirety of her life in the Roman Catholic religion.
Post retirement found her caring for all her loved ones no matter their distance from home. An avid seamstress she created numerous gifts for her family and friends. On occasion she was known to say, “Surround yourself with positive friends and you will be happy.” This was clearly the case with her as she had a tremendous number of wonderful friends and spent as much time with them as possible, including traveling with them or visiting them around the USA. She eventually visited Ireland, the home of her ancestors, where she and Matt had planned to visit before he passed away.
Everyone who met Charlotte Kehoe knew her goodness. She will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be Monday, March 24, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Urbanski’s Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave. Temperance, MI where the funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Whiteford Union Cemetery.
