Constance (Connie) Hornyak, 90 years, of Temperance, MI, passed away at home surrounded by family on July 3, 2024.
Connie was born on April 4, 1934, in Temperance, MI to Floyd T. and Anna V. Madalinski and lived most of her life within a mile of her birthplace in Temperance. She was a 1952 graduate of Bedford High School and a 1956 graduate of the University of Toledo, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Education prior to starting her teaching career. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She married Emery J. Hornyak, Jr. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Temperance, MI, on November 22, 1958, and together Connie and Emery enjoyed over 43 years of marriage.
She served as a full-time elementary teacher for Mason Consolidated Schools for 5 years, retiring before the birth of her children. She restarted teaching as a substitute teacher in the Mason Schools in the 1980s and 1990s. She was also a volunteer at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance, MI, where her family were charter members, teaching as a catechist and assisting at numerous church rummage sales. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, family events, dining out with close friends and former teachers, and traveling to visit her children as they married and moved onwards. She was active as a member of the Bedford Community Arts Council.
She was preceded in death by her father, Floyd T. Madalinski and mother, Anna V. (Lesnieski) Madalinski; her husband, Emery J. Hornyak, Jr.; brother-in-law, Richard L. Hornyak, Sr.; nephew, Richard L. Hornyak, Jr.; and one grandson, Stephen.
She is survived by 3 children, her son, Dr. Thomas J. (Mary) Hornyak, of Bethesda, MD; daughter, Jean Ann (James Hakala) Hornyak, of Longmont, CO; and son, Robert E. (Karen) Hornyak of Center Line, MI. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Alyssa, Mark, Nathaniel, Cecilia, and Karl; 2 sisters, Annette (Daniel) Stobierski of Wyoming, MI and Patricia (James) Wesselman of Trenton, MI; a brother, Ronald (Drenda) Madalinski of Ruskin, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to add a special thanks to Willamae Bruce and Angel’s Helpful Hands for providing compassionate care at home during her final year.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Urbanski’s Bedford Funeral Chapel, 8300 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, MI with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m., led by Deacon Marty Selmek. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Patrick Rohen on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 8330 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, MI where visiting will begin after 10:00 a.m. in the narthex. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
