David H. Dewey passed away peacefully on May 13, 2023, at 91 at Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania, Ohio. David is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Dewey, and sister Deanne Henry. He is greatly missed by his two daughters, Mary Ellen (Kurt Kettelhut) and Liz (Daniel Belcher). He was also greatly loved by his grandson Karl David Kettelhut (Hattie), great grandson, Karl David Jr., and his granddaughter, Sarah Botbyl (Brook).
David was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 18, 1932 to David H. Dewey, Sr. and Lauretta (n’ee Coger). He grew up in Muncie, Indiana and graduated from Burris High School in 1951. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant as a Language Specialist. David graduated from Ball State University with a BA in History and English in 1958. He met Alice on a blind date and they married in 1958.
The Deweys moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1959 where Dave worked for Owens-Illinois for over 30 years as a manager of compensation and executive speech writer. Upon his retirement, he joined Alice in their thriving antiques business for another 30 years.
Athletics and competition were lifelong passions of Dave’s. He was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs since his boyhood, and was also an avid golfer and at-home Jeopardy champion. He was also a loving and supportive father to his daughters in all of their pursuits. Becoming a great-grandfather in 2021 brought perhaps the biggest joy of his life.
Dave was selfless, creative and a little bit rebellious; especially when in cahoots with his younger brother, Dean (d. 2023).
Dave will be interred at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan this summer. Donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.com.
