James F. Schaefer, age 82, passed away peacefully in his home on May 24, 2026, in Dayton, OH. The son of James and Mildred (Brosamer) Schaefer he was born May 29, 1943, in Toledo, OH.
Jim grew up in Toledo and attended St. Francis de Sales High School (1961). He graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Industrial/Mechanical Engineering and from Bowling Green State University with an MBA. Jim worked for Dana Corporation for 38 years, working at the Weatherhead plant in Antwerp, OH, the Dana plant in Ft. Wayne, IN, and the Dana plant in Robinson, IL. He and Carolyn moved to Dayton after his retirement to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Jim will be remembered as a caring and loving husband and father who loved to play golf and softball and was an avid reader. To family and friends, he was known to be a quiet, soft-spoken man who had a kind word for everyone. Jim and Carolyn were members of St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Dayton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carolyn (Emmick), and four children, Lisa (Todd) Boone-Berry, Lori (Michael) Martin, James Joseph (Jill) Schaefer, and Nicholas (Katie) Schaefer; five grandchildren, Rebecca Boone, Madeline (Matthew Reid) Boone, Dylan Schaefer, Lillian Schaefer, Sophia Schaefer, and his brother-in-law, Thomas Emmick. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Thomas (Shelvie) Schaefer.
The Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 29, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church 5373 Main St. Sylvania, OH where he will lie in state in the narthex at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Toledo.
